Many relaxation techniques use visualization, particularly those that use meditation. Visualization consists in focusing on pictures, places or events, and becoming aware of the emotion that is associated with them. If the principle of visualization is simple, applying it is relatively difficult, because it requires an ability to concentrate, and a capacity for focusing inward on oneself.

Visualization techniques are often used in conjunction with deep relaxation techniques leading to an altered state of consciousness. Visualization techniques comprise guided imagery, in which patients are required to focus on an image suggested by the therapist, and unguided imagery, in which patients are allowed to focus on images that they conjure up themselves.
Visualization empowers people to overcome stress and anxiety. It helps patients regain physical, mental, and emotional stability.
Visualization techniques are recommended in cognitive therapy programs centered on emotions, to deal with post-traumatic stress disorder and phobias for example.
